Everyone who says Spike is amazing for loving Buffy w/o a soul need to take a step back and look at your own life bc you are seriously in danger of being in an abusive relationship. Season 6 spuffy is shown as nothing less than unhealthy (season 7 is a different story). Like geez the guy goes to beat up Buffy in Smashed. Which is fine considering Buffy has beaten him up before. But beating each other up
(w/o consent)is not the beginning of a healthy relationship.
That is such an extreme interpretation of their relationship in season 6 which is, I think, more complex and nuanced than you give them credit for.
I think Spike does love Buffy in season 6 (I even think she loved him in some kind of way at this point), and no, I’m not in danger of being in an unhealthy relationship, thank you for your concern. But I agree that he does not love her in an healthy way, he has a twisted vision of what love is. But he was ready to die for her and Dawn in Intervention because the idea of her losing her sister was unbearable to him, he was ready to die by her side when they fought against Glory, he took care of Dawn (we see him having empathy for her several times) and he never expected anything from Buffy at the beginning of season 6, he even asked her to let him “rest in peace”. Buffy came to him, they got closer and closer during the course of season 6, and their relationship turned out to be about sex because that’s the only thing Buffy was capable of giving at the moment. But Spike wanted more. He’s the one who notices that they’re having a conversation in Dead Things. I think he would have wanted something different, but the circumstances, for her like for him, weren’t good enough for that. Buffy was depressive, Spike had no soul, and as a vampire, he often acts like one. But I don’t think it diminished the feelings he has for her. He loved her in his own twisted way, but he loved her. The attempted rape was a huge mistake which reminded us that Spike wasn’t able to control himself in that kind of situations where he couldn’t access to the person he wanted (and loved, which makes the attempt even worse), and that’s why he wanted to get back his soul. Because he didn’t wanted to be that kind of person, he wanted to be a man, and wanted to love her the way she deserved to be loved.
Season 7 didn’t create his love for her, we don’t see him falling in love with her at this point. His love was already there. He just grow to be healthier and more respectful.
Spike feeling only lust for Buffy is not the way I see it, and according to some interviews, this is not the way writers intended to write it.
You’re entitled to your own opinion about the show, but please don’t be condescending with Spuffy fans ;-)
Everything here is … hard, and bright, and violent. Everything I feel, everything I touch … this is Hell
