Spike’s attempted rape on Buffy was a terrible scene to watch for the fans, no matter if they were shippers or not, but what I find absolutely terrible is when I read people over the internet that introduce Spuffy to non-fans by saying that “Spike raped Buffy”. No, he…

Wow, no! Huge misunderstanding. I reblog your post because I think it’s important for people to keep in mind what you just said. I’m not being touchy about this topic in regards of Buffy’s character, because it was rape for her, and I’m not trying to diminish in any way her status of victim. You say it very well, she was not less violated or victimized because the act was not fully completed. I’m not talking about what it meant to the characters.

I’m being touchy about this topic because of what it says about the shippers. If Buffy hadn’t succeed to push him away, that Spike achieved his action, soul or not soul by this time, the relationship would have been definitely buried. I don’t think any shipper would have been able to override this. I am a Spuffy shipper, and I have my reasons, but I don’t want people to take what I call a “shortcut” (English is not my mother tongue, maybe I’m employing this term in the wrong way) to qualify what happened in Seeing Red as a rape as a fully accomplished action. Because I would NEVER have been able to override this, and I don’t like when I see Spuffy shippers being introduced to people who don’t even watch the show as people who are able to keep on shipping a relationship with a completed rape (because it was what the post that made me react was about). I do believe that it made a huge difference for us that Buffy was able to push him away, and make him come back to reason by stopping his madness.

The attempted rape was already terrible enough, and the fact that it wasn’t achieved made a difference in our ability (at least in my ability) to accept the relationship they had in season 7. That’s why I’m being sensitive about it.

As the relationship being abusive during four years, I disagree. Of course, they were enemies in a show placed in a fantastic world, and their treatment of each other was always specific to that kind of situation, but it was never abusive the way it was from the moment they started to sleep together in season 6. Before that, they shared really nice moments of understanding and support in seasons 5 & 6. Not only of course, but it was more textured than “abusive”/”not abusive”.

TL;DR: your focus shouldn’t be on how “wrong” it is that viewers call this rape, but on how rape and assault hurt people.

Please don’t make assumptions about me based on a post, you don’t know me ;)

Spike’s attempted rape on Buffy was a terrible scene to watch for the fans, no matter if they were shippers or not, but what I find absolutely terrible is when I read people over the internet that introduce Spuffy to non-fans by saying that “Spike raped Buffy”. No, he didn’t. Attempting to do it was terrible enough without people taking shortcuts like this.

And liking/loving the Spuffy relationship doesn’t mean either apologizing his actions for when he tried to, or forget or skip that part of their history. At least, not for me. It was one of the lowest points of their relationship, but the unhealthy part was only a part of their complicated journey. And I don’t think that it is the reason people loved them together.

SOULMATE:

Line breaks: soul|mate

Pronounciation: /ˈsəʊlmeɪt
  • A person who strongly resembles another in attitudes or beliefs
  • A person ideally suited to another as a close friend or romantic partner.
Inspired by (x).
  • When Buffy is beating up Spike in the alley (Dead Things)
  • The way Buffy reacts towards Spike when Riley shows up in his crypt (As You Were).
  • The attempted rape itself (Seeing Red) (while I find the discussion before interesting).

Those are characteristic of the abusive dimension of their relationship in season 6, and in a way, I find it interesting, from an external point of view, because they are the catalysts of everything that goes wrong in their relationship by this time of the show, but still, those scenes make me really uncomfortable.
